I will be posting a vid as an edit to this entry later on today. It'll also be on my Facebook.
EDIT: Here's the video!
What’s your nemesis trick?

Anything with a bracket grip, because that grip hurts my wrist, forearm, and elbow. It sucks because there's a lot of pretty moves you can do, especially on spinning pole.
What was it from and have you overcome the cause of it?

I've gotten so many bruises from pole, it's crazy. I had a really nasty one on my right calf from leg hangs for about a week and a half. I've yet to fix that since I currently have a less-severe bruise in the same spot from the same trick. Not sure what it is I'm doing wrong...perhaps I just don't do enough outside leg hangs with my right leg. I usually invert on the right and thus use my left leg to outside hook. I've accepted my fate to be forever bruised as long as I'm poling. :PKatiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07368305510816037791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116369736963189929.post-46313875948539255102012-09-14T08:01:00.003-07:002012-09-14T08:01:54.427-07:00Day Twenty-ThreeIf you couldn’t pole dance for the rest of your life, what other exercise would you start doing in its place?

That would suck. Assuming pole is the only restriction, I would go back to Studio Revolution and work on silks and trapeze and partner acro. Those things are fun, too...but pole is where my heart truly lies.

I have to think of a name for myself for the October performance. Not like a stripper name, like Glitter or Sunshine or whatever, but some of the girls come up with awesome names. I have a few ideas that I really like, but I have over a month to pick. And it's not a requirement, but it is super cool.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07368305510816037791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116369736963189929.post-13542441021066406272012-09-13T14:19:00.001-07:002012-09-13T14:19:27.402-07:00Day Twenty-TwoDefine your relationship with pole.

Interesting question. Hrm. Well, I love pole, and pole loves me. I'm really committed to making it work for the rest of my life. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm ready to get married to pole. Yes, I've decided. I'm going to ask pole to marry me. Tonight, at my tricks class. Dim the lights, get some Tite Grip on my hands, climb on it -- set the mood, y'know? And then, when the timing is just right, I'll pop the question. I hope pole says yes.

Wow, this was possibly the weirdest thing I've ever written in my entire life.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07368305510816037791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116369736963189929.post-32384433926948034302012-09-12T22:09:00.000-07:002012-09-12T22:09:06.562-07:00Day Twenty-OneWhat advice would you give to someone who wants to try pole dancing?

Go for it! Just realize it may not be for you. Like any other sport, you don't know if you'll love it without giving it a shot first. But also realize that the style of one studio differs greatly from the style of another. If you're really serious about it, check out all the studios in your area and pick the one you like the best -- the atmosphere, the other girls, the instructors, the poles themselves, etc. Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07368305510816037791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116369736963189929.post-79677451227800836442012-09-11T17:58:00.003-07:002012-09-11T17:59:12.460-07:00Days Nineteen and TwentyWhat’s currently on your wishlist (tricks, shoes, items, etc)?

A whole bunch of tricks! Leg hang switches, extended butterfly, blind hand grab, aerial mounts, poses that require serious flexibility (add flexibility to the list as well!), and an actual pole to use at home.

Impromptu freestyle time! Post your most recent freestyle or hop on your pole and film one now.

I actually don't go back to the gym until Thursday, so I don't have a way to show a freestyle. However, I will show my practice video from a week ago. Keep in mind that many of the ground moves are indeed freestyle, and this is very much a dry run of the routine. There's still a lot to polish.

I have a couple, actually. First is Felix Cane, which is probably not all that surprising. Her name is probably the most recognized in all of pole dancing. She's famous for the spatchcock (see previous post about ultimate moves), but also for her amazingly fast rise to the top. She is considered to be one of the best, if not the best pole dancer in the world.

Then there's Natasha Wang. Oh my goodness, I love her. She has an amazing style that's all her own. She is so graceful and strong, and her artistry is just breathtaking. Her lines are just gorgeous. You can tell she has a dance background. Just an amazing performer.

Well, I go to about 3-4 classes each week, and each class is at least an hour (sometimes longer), so I'm going to average it out to probably about 4 or 5 hours a week. If I had the money, I'd also go to Studio Revolution to continue aerial silks, trapeze, ballet, contortion, partner acrobatics, and yoga. More things to do at SR, as you can tell, but my heart truly lies with pole dance. Perhaps I'll take a look at my budget and see if there's some things I can cut out to afford both gyms.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07368305510816037791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116369736963189929.post-64401024401647337882012-09-07T08:59:00.001-07:002012-09-07T08:59:32.347-07:00Day SixteenWhat’s in your pole bag?

Well, I don't have an official pole bag (although maybe I should...retail therapy, anyone?!), but here's what I take with me to classes.

1) Tite grip and X-Grip. See previous post about my favorite pole accessories.
2) Ballet slippers. Fun to dance in, and they make my feet look even better.
3) iPod/headphones/arm strap. For when I want to disappear into my own music.
4) Water bottle. So essential!
5) Choreography notes. Even though I'm known to completely abandon my choreo and do improv instead.

Hrm...perhaps I shall look into a separate pole bag. To Google!Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07368305510816037791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116369736963189929.post-76988502709961107442012-09-06T09:23:00.003-07:002012-09-06T09:24:44.202-07:00Day FifteenPost a picture of your awesome biceps, abs, or back!

I tried very hard to get a picture of any of these, but the camera on my phone isn't high-quality enough to capture the definition in my biceps. And it's pretty much impossible to get a good abs or back shot by yourself. Thus, I will give you a picture of Troy and me doing partner acrobatics at GenCon last month. Because only the cool kids do exercise on vacation. :)

This pose is called the back angel. It's my very favorite to do with Troy because he's such a stable base. I trust him wholeheartedly to keep me safe up there. And it shows off my flexible back and lovely toe points. And look at that definition in my calves. Toot my own horn? Don't mind if I do. :DKatiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07368305510816037791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116369736963189929.post-29123448125130162142012-09-05T21:43:00.000-07:002012-09-05T21:43:28.764-07:00Day FourteenQuick announcement before I do my daily challenge -- I did a shoulder mount for the very first time tonight! It's an advanced move and takes a good amount of strength, so I am extraordinarily pleased with myself. Seriously, I'm on a freaking high right now. :D

What is your favorite pole video to watch?

Pink Puma's Master Cup performance, without a doubt. There are others I like to watch, but I just love her artistry, strength, flexibility, power, etc. Enjoy!

How has pole dance changed you or your life?

Many ways. First of all, my body is radically different. It isn't much lighter, but I take up less space -- ie, less body fat. I'm no longer self-conscious in a bikini. Many people have commented on my figure and asked if I've lost weight. I am very strong for the average woman, and my muscles are toning up. I am getting more flexible all the time. My dancing has also improved, which has been a goal of mine. It has also encouraged me to eat a more healthful diet and drink more water.

I have met many amazing people through pole. It has grown from a fun exercise into a full-blown passion for the sport. I can't imagine never not doing pole for the rest of my life. I want to be poling when I'm 80!

Have you ever been injured because of pole? How?

Aside from bruising in all the usual places that all dancers get, not really. Sometimes in certain grips, I can hurt my wrists and forearms, so I try not to do those. I've fallen on my stomach (see previous post about embarrassing moments), but that really didn't injure me. So I'm lucky enough to not have really seriously done any damage. As long as you are taught with a qualified, knowledgeable instructor, pole is usually very safe.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07368305510816037791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116369736963189929.post-11344204246343986832012-09-02T08:08:00.002-07:002012-09-02T08:08:21.957-07:00Day ElevenWhat kind of clothes do you prefer to dance in? Leg warmers, sports bras, sparkly hot pants? Show us a picture!

Usually a sports bra, tank top, and short biking shorts. Looks something like this.

The tank usually comes off when I'm ready to invert so I have plenty of side skin to stick to the pole with. :)Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07368305510816037791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116369736963189929.post-43796601874504131542012-09-01T18:55:00.005-07:002012-09-01T18:55:55.299-07:00Days Nine and TenWhoops...missed a day! So, on with the show.

What’s the strangest or most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you during a session?

In an open pole class, I was going into a kiss spin. I had to hold on with both hands instead of one, and as I leaned into the spin, one hand slipped off the pole. It sent me off-balance, and I totally fell flat on my stomach. Knocked the wind right out of me. Pretty damn embarrassing. It's such an easy spin.

Where do you pole: studio, at home, playgrounds, clubs? And why do you prefer pole dance there?

My studio. I've never been able to pole anywhere else. I'd love to have a pole at home, and even go to a bar/club where there is one and show off with some friends. I do love the privacy and support of the studio quite a bit, though. And I think if I had a pole at home, I'd never leave. :PKatiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07368305510816037791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116369736963189929.post-87317654208464756282012-08-30T18:20:00.002-07:002012-08-30T18:20:44.483-07:00Day EightShow us a picture of your favorite pole dancing shoes or accessory! What are they and why do you like them?

Tite grip! I couldn't have any prayer of sticking to a pole without it.

It's generally used by golfers to eliminate moisture from their hands, but it works wonders for me as a pole dancer. My palms and inner thighs get SO sweaty during classes, and this takes care of it from the get-go. After the Tite grip, I usually follow with X-Grip, which is a powder made from chalk and resin. I struggled for a very long time with sweaty palms making me slip and slide off the pole. This is kind of my miracle product, really. It's going to come in very handy for my first performance in October.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07368305510816037791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116369736963189929.post-51755729791660864502012-08-29T15:21:00.003-07:002012-08-29T15:21:43.547-07:00Day SevenWho supports you the most with your pole dancing goals and why do you pick them?

Jessica V. from TGR in Iowa has always been one of my biggest cheerleaders. :) She's always quick to compliment the picture of my newest move and to encourage me to reach for more. She's a great person, and I miss her a lot.

I think overall, it's very challenging -- you're constantly learning something new, training your body to do crazy things it never would in a normal day, building your strength, working your flexibility, etc. I think sometimes the hardest thing is to be willing to take a step back and take a few days off when you feel overwhelmed and overworked. While challenging, pole is also super-addicting and a lot of fun for me, so it's hard to make myself NOT go to class. But I have to consider what's best for my body and mind, and sometimes that's simply to take a day or two off. This would be much more difficult if I had a pole at home, though. :PKatiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07368305510816037791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116369736963189929.post-61756480419080919692012-08-27T20:48:00.002-07:002012-08-27T20:48:26.095-07:00Day FiveIf you could only dance to one song for a day (on repeat), what would it be?

Oh man, this is tough. Sometimes I want to dance to something slow and flowy, and sometimes I want a quick song. If I had to choose right now, though, it would probably be "Merchant Prince" by Thomas Bergersen. Not your typical pole dance fare, but that's kind of what I love about it. Plus it isn't a very lengthy song, so for me, it's just enough time to get some nice choreo in there without completely draining me.

I actually haven't ever done a performance just yet. And I don't have any videos of me poling. But I'm working on choreo for our studio's show in October, and it's going to be awesome. Hopefully once it's all put together, I'll get a rehearsal vid up. And maybe a vid of the actual show. I did do a quick freestyle to a song from Toymaker's Dream called "Rebellion." However, the song requires more skills than I currently have, in my opinion. I pair it often with Pink Puma's Master Cup performance because it's just too perfect. :)Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07368305510816037791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116369736963189929.post-60865840552532273682012-08-25T19:12:00.002-07:002012-08-25T19:12:44.122-07:00Day ThreeWhat is the ultimate pole trick or move you’d like to be able to accomplish (Spatchcock, Oona Splits, etc)?
For right now, it's the Jade. I have the basic hold down, but I don't have the 180 degree split yet. More like 110, 120.

This is what it looks like for those not in the know:

Ultimate move...hrm, there's a lot of those. Spatchcock is always one to work towards. It looks amazing on a spinning pole. Serious flexibility, though.

I have to admit, there were a few times in the first couple months of dancing that I thought about giving it up. For me, those first 90-ish days or so, while also filled with a lot of achievements, were also very frustrating. I was not nearly as strong as any of the other girls (through no fault of my own), and I wanted to be able to do everything all at once. I have this bad habit of expecting myself to be awesome at something totally new right away, and if I don't, I get angry with myself. But seeing everything I still had yet to attain and having accomplished quite a bit within a short time gave me hope. I kept at it despite the "ugly voice" in the back of my head saying I'd never be as good as the others. Almost a year later and at a new studio, sometimes I still feel that way. But I learn something new every time I go to class, and my body has transformed greatly as a result of my perseverance. Now that it's bloomed into a full-out passion, it's something I don't think I could ever give up on.

I started pole in October 2011. After randomly finding a cornucopia of pole dancing videos on Youtube, it intrigued me enough to at least take one class and see if I liked it. So I did...and I've been completely, utterly hooked ever since. :)

In other news, I need to get some coffee into my system before I take this kinesiology exam. My sleep schedule is so mucked up ever since I got back from GenCon. I feel like a zombie.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07368305510816037791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116369736963189929.post-86674862689309565732012-08-22T21:27:00.000-07:002012-08-22T21:29:24.812-07:0030 Day Pole Dance Challenge! To try to keep this more updated, I've decided to do a 30 day pole dance challenge. So I will pretty much either be forced to or really want to post every day for the next 30 days. Looking at the list, I have a feeling I won't be able to stop typing. Since pole dance is a passion of mine, I can talk about it for eons. So here's the overall cap of what the challenge will consist of, and Day 1 will begin tomorrow. Hope you all get a little more insight into this awesome world of poling!
Guess I just have an old soul. Don't judge me. :P

So, let's recap what's been going on since July 14...not a lot, I suppose. The second session of summer term starts next week, which is great because that means an insanely lighter schedule than last session. I was going six days a week, and two days out of the week, I was at school for 8 hours. Now I just have Asian Bodywork M/W, Upper Body Kinesiology T/Th, and continuing massage lab on Saturday mornings.

Been thinking about picking up a part-time job just for some extra jingle. I've only applied to Starbuck's so far, but I'm not desperate, so if I don't hear back, it won't be a big deal. May try some other places, but right now, it's just an idea.

Speaking of ideas, I've been really thinking about a tattoo for the last few months. I was never opposed to them as long as what I got was meaningful. For awhile, I couldn't think of a single thing I wanted on my body for the rest of my life. Then in the last few weeks, I started getting some nice ideas. But they were still "eh...maybe" designs. Then I came across this.

From the moment I laid eyes on it, it spoke to me -- deeply. There's a treble and bass clef in there as well as staff lines. And I absolutely adore the piano-key wings of the phoenix. Since I have always been and always will be a musician, this is totally a tattoo I could see myself getting. I'm still going to sit on the idea for a few months while researching various shops around the city, but as Troy said, this is "one tattoo to rule them all." I'm in love with it.

I started vlogging again! If you don't have my channel, click here. There's also a new LP in progress -- Assassin's Creed. I've been a little lax on that since I had finals this week, but I'll try to record more next week. But my vlogs are centered around my CFdom. I may do some on other topics, though. Just depends on what strikes my fancy. I'm thinking I may do one on my coffee obsession. :D

Kay, that about does it for now. Bliss!
